The Imperial Qing Empire falls, officially ending the era of Emperors. Three palace eunuchs Lee Siu-kung (Wayne Lai 黎耀祥), Dan Tin (Power Chan 陳國邦), and Chan Siu-fung (Raymond Cho曹永廉) are expelled and demoted to peasantry. As they struggle to make a living for themselves beyond the palace borders, they come across the con artist Chui Tsun-sing (Edwin Siu 蕭正楠), who disguises himself as a eunuch to gain their trust. A string of unfortunate events lead them captured and later sold as servants to the Kams’, a rich family led by amatriarchy. The family’s leader Kam Heung (Nancy Wu 胡定欣) owns a rice shop, and though she presents herself as a wealthy and powerful businesswoman, she struggles to find balance in her life due to the weight she has to carry on her shoulders. The Kam family’s eldest daughter Kam Dai-nam (Rosina Lam 林夏薇), who enjoys crossdressing, constantly stirs trouble for the family due to her exploits, creating more problems for Kam Heung to deal with.
Kam Heung is pressured by the committee of their village to find a groom so the family name could be carried on.Kam Heung eventually finds her way to Siu-kung, and marries him. Meanwhile, the family’s arch nemesis Tsui Dai-fu (Lee Shing-cheong 李成昌) has his maidservant Wong Lin (Natalie Tong 唐詩詠) befriend the Kams so she can spy on Kam Heung’s older brother Kam Cheong (John Chiang 姜大偉), Dai-fu’s love rival.
At this time, Kam Heung pressures Siu-kung to sire a child with her, but Siu-kung could not fight up enough courage to tell her that he is castrated. The eunuchs do everything they can to fix the situation they’re in, but the more they try, the messier it gets.
辛亥革命後，清朝被推翻，一班「亡國」太監被遣散出宮，一直身為奴才的公公如何運用在紫禁城學到的生存技倆重過新生活、重新得到尊嚴、自由與自我價值，以「人」的身份開創一片新天地？離開了波譎雲詭的紫禁城，重返民間，生活從此就變得簡單、安穩？
被逼回復自由 看盡世人冷眼
民國政府成立後，清遜帝溥儀及一眾皇室成員雖獲允許繼續住在紫禁城，惟建褔宮一場大火，令溥儀備受驚嚇，下令解散太監！自小以紫禁城為家的三名太監李肅恭(黎耀祥飾)、丹田(陳國邦飾)、陳小鳳(曹永廉飾)，一心在此落地生根終老的計劃被打亂，忽然重獲自由，更使他們頓失依靠，顛沛流離。
肅恭、丹田、小鳳對宮外謀生一竅不通，眼見太監被視為封建制度的象徵，為世人所鄙視，三人也只得隱藏身份、苟且偷生。一次，肅恭、丹田、小鳳巧遇江湖小混混崔晉昇(蕭正楠飾)被反太監組織窮追猛打，誤以為晉昇也是「無根」太監，有見同是天涯淪落人，憤而出手相救。期間，小鳳更為救晉昇而中槍命危，晉昇感到人間有情，視三子如手足……
奴才宿命難改 轉為豪門下人
四子輾轉流落到深鎮，肅恭、丹田、晉昇為給小鳳籌醫藥費，不惜落草為寇，打劫地方土豪金家大小姐金帶男(林夏薇飾)，誰料引致帶男哮喘病發，命懸一線。三人唯恐搞出人命，急送帶男求診，卻被帶男的三姑姐金香(胡定欣飾)人贓並獲。三人為求金香救小鳳一命，甘願為奴，到金家當下人。
肅恭、丹田、晉昇甫進金家，便遇到深鎮另一巨頭徐家來犯。原來深鎮由數條村落組成，其中金家村以金香為首，徐家村以徐大富(李成昌飾)為首，兩村世代相爭。肅恭、丹田、晉昇見識到金香巾幗英姿，言詞鏗鏘，處處力壓徐大富的氣焰，只好在金家規行矩步，但求小鳳早日痊癒。
金家米業金福隆雖在金香帶領下如日方中，惟金家人丁凋零。此時，金家二小姐金帶子(陳庭欣飾)與入贅夫婿方振西(胡諾言飾)努力多年，帶子終於夢熊有兆。金家上下歡天喜地之際，丹田卻憑昔日在御藥房工作習得的醫理，指出帶子「吃詐糊」假孕，雖令金家陷入崩潰，但丹田的醫術卻因此而漸露頭角，令主子另眼相看。
尋回昔日榮譽 奴才突變主子
一天，金家村天降異象，傳出「太監的詛咒」，傳聞當年李連英下咒要金家絕子絕孫，現在一一應驗，以致村民人心惶惶。金香於是召開村民大會，呼籲村民積極生育，未料反被村民要求身先士卒招婿成親，開枝散葉。
金香為平息民憤急於成親，卻發現深鎮男人皆怯於自己威名，無人問津。肅恭出謀獻策，幫金家村女子以全新形象示人，頓時求親者眾。肅恭、丹田、小鳳因此得到主子器重，在選婿大會中被委以重任，尋回昔日在紫禁城的歸屬感……
然而招親一事功虧一簣，經過幾番波折，金香情急之下竟招肅恭為婿﹗肅恭被逼成親後，金香漸對肅恭生好感，肅恭為隱瞞太監身份，只好對金香左閃右避。金香以為肅恭心有所屬，夫婦相敬如賓，但二人油然生出真感情。肅恭自成為金家姑爺後，丹田、小鳳亦從下人晉升要職，從奴才一躍成為主子……
剛脫宮廷凶險 復墮豪門暗湧
正當太監三子的新生活看似漸入佳境，徐家卻派出臥底黃蓮(唐詩詠飾)潛入金家，接近二房老爺金昌(姜大偉飾)，並從中挑撥離間，意圖令金家四分五裂。另外，晉昇在金家生活並不如意，又意外發現自己竟是金家長子嫡孫，在他人慫恿之下，決意要搶奪金家財產……面對如此風浪，三子及金家上下能否同心共度難關？
